What is the "bitter water" women had to drink in Numbers 5:21-28?

Numbers 5:21-28 outlines a procedure with which wives accused of infidelity are forced made to drink "bitter water" as part of a ritual that is supposed to make them miscarry if they're guilty but not if they're innocent. Does anybody have any idea what this "bitter water" is?
